"Your Green Limousine," otherwise known as Total Transit, a transportation management company serving the Phoenix and Tucson areas in Arizona, has gained quite a reputation for being friendly - to its customers and to the environment. Founded in 1984, the discount cab service now boasts a fleet of more than 500 taxi cabs, 150 of those belonging to one of the largest collection of Toyota Prius hybrids in the world. Painting their hybrids a bright shade of green to promote awareness on the street, Total Transit has noticed that reducing their carbon footprint is becoming contagious. "We get a lot of calls requesting the green Prius cabs," explained Karol Clark, marketing director at Total Transit. "Customer response has been great."
Owners Craig and Christine Hughes first added the Prius hybrids to Total Transit's fleet on Earth Day in 2008. "The Hughes' daughter first gave them the idea. She thought it would be a good way for the company to do its part and improve the environment," Clark pointed out. Since 2008, the company's Prius hybrids have offset more than 5,000 tons of carbon per year when compared to standard taxi cab models operated by Total Transit. In 2009, Total Transit celebrated 25 years in business, and was honored as the TLPA Large Taxi Cab Fleet of the Year, due in part, to its investment in environmentally friendly Prius hybrids. Ultimately, the Hughes' goal is to continue evolving their fleet with changing technology, which could include the addition of plug-in vehicles that recharge with solar panels. In addition to the environmental benefits, the company and its drivers have increased their profitability due to the high fuel efficiency of the green vehicles. The hybrid averages 40-50 miles per gallon of gas, while the standard Total Transit taxi cab only reaches around 17 miles.
Craig Hughes' passion for efficiency and reliability also played a large role in the selection of Integra Telecom as Total Transit's telecommunications and Internet service provider. Wade Harding, Information Services Manager for Total Transit disclosed that "Total Transit was able to save money," and has noticed a "higher quality of telecommunications and Internet service after switching to Integra Telecom. Integra has a much lower outage rate than other providers, and performance has been much better than previous vendors. Life has been much easier for the IT staff since switching to Integra." Harding also noted that, "We have always received a quick response when we call Integra for service. Installation of new services was very fast. In 2007, we urgently needed a T1 put up for radio data, and Integra came through on time." Integra Telecom now provides services for Total Transit's family of companies, including Discount Cab, ValueTrans and RideSource.
